Almost six months ago I received some shocking news related to my hearing ability.

The prior post explains everything you need to know to get caught up.

A very big thank you to everyone who supported my fundraising efforts (and a couple over the top donations from those who are nothing less than angels).

I now have my very own set of wonderful hearing aids.

This is a happy day for me friends and family!

These aids are like a Rolls Royce compared to the lender aids I had been using. They have zero feedback in my ears, they are comfortable, they work in conjunction with my phone making life much easier, and they are rechargeable so that I don't have to deal with changing batteries every 4 days.

To say I am grateful would be an understatement.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who made this possible for me!LadyShuttleMaker aka MadMadPotterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15649649988687609909noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8016156828945610244.post-9218154459513178002016-10-14T13:57:00.000-06:002016-10-14T14:37:22.134-06:00(((SAY WHAT???)))

I recently received some rather difficult news.
I have been suffering from multiple/double ear infections all year. After six doctor visits and 3 rounds of antibiotics I finally got a referral to see an ENT specialist. After the examination, CT scan and hearing test, I was informed that both of my ears have suffered a 50% hearing loss, and that I will require hearing aids for the rest of my life.
The ear infections most likely have nothing to do with the hearing loss but this was the catalyst that brought me to where I am now. Also, they don't know why, nor do they know if it is progressive yet. The best guess right now is that it is probably attributed to head trauma...of which I have a long history.
To say that I spent the first two days in utter shock is an understatement. I'm only 42, how can this be?
I can't wallow in self pity forever so I have accepted it and honestly this diagnosis explains SOOOO much! I have been struggling for years understanding higher pitches, especially female voices (my little daughter is in this category).
My ears are hypersensitive to all sound due to them overcompensating for my hearing loss. What sounds normal to you sounds twice as loud to me, and it's very painful. So I often find myself avoiding social situations because they are so exhausting (and I thought this was solely due to my introvertedness.) But come to find out there has been a lot more going on with me.
Anyhow, the worst news is that hearing aids are extremely expensive and they are NOT covered by insurance. So BOOOO to that!
I have decided that I just cannot let my family bear this burden. We've already been through so much the last few years and we've had enough stinkin setbacks.
Soooo my solution is to have a little fundraising campaign where I can sell my artwork just in time for the Holidays!
I need to raise $3,800 (these aids are the middle of the road quality).
I'm not looking for sympathy nor am I looking for handouts, I am asking that you consider my art worthy enough to give to yourself or friends and family.
And if my art just isn't your "cup of tea" would you mind sharing my story?
In the meantime, the doc has loaned me a set of demo aids which I am wearing now. HOLY COW, I had no idea how much I've been missing out on! I kind of love them and hate them at the same time! But guess what, I don't have to say "WHAT???" to my daughter all the time anymore!

Thank you in advance for your support!
Here is a link to my Etsy shop where I am selling glicee prints of my Watercolors. I will also be listing greeting cards as soon as I can. I will be posting throughout the weekend so keep checking back. ...and I promise it won't be JUST chickens.

It started with a wonderful trip to the state of Georgia for Palmetto Tat days. I finally got to meet so many people that I have been internet friends with for years but had never met in "real" life. It was so fun! I could only stay for one day of classes so I took a class from Riet and one from Georgia S.

Georgia put forth a challenge and of course I took the bait. She asked for a single long picot on a ring separated by a few knots, not a folded over double picot, and this is what I happily came up with. (Sorry, she made me promise not to tell how I did it.)

Much to my chagrin I have not yet completed Ineke's Owl project taught by Riet, or I would have posted that picture right [here]. I do so dislike having unfinished projects, but with that said, I have to remind myself that I am in the small child raising season of my life, which leaves so little room for anything else. Miss P is so stinkin full of energy! Truly, it's the first thing people comment on when they meet her. I get it people! My kid is HYPER! Lord have mercy on me! But I digress.

After Palmetto Tat Days I rushed off to Seattle to photograph my youngest Sister's wedding. Check out her tatted headdress! She really pulled it off and made such a beautiful bride!

I was able to capture the very moment that she first saw herself in the mirror. She exclaimed, "I look like a princess!"

Miss P did a terrific job of being the flower girl!
After returning from Seattle I got some kind of stupid stage 5 klinger super bug! It took me three full weeks to recover from that one.
And mercy me if October hasn't been busy. In fact, it is so busy that I keep forgetting today is my birthday! Yep, I am now the ripe old age of 24...and don't any of you dare accuse me of dyslexia!LadyShuttleMaker aka MadMadPotterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15649649988687609909noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8016156828945610244.post-65159654989028891132015-09-02T13:13:00.001-06:002015-09-02T13:13:52.767-06:00Getting ready for Palmetto Tat days!Well, I am blowing the dust off my shuttles and threads and packing them up for my long drive to Georgia tomorrow. I am excited to meet in person the many tatters that I have been my internet friends for quite some time. I will also get to see a few familiar faces.
I suppose that will give me some material for new tatting posts. ......finally.....

I miss her so much already, but she really is loving school so far. This will also give me a few hours of uninterrupted time which I haven't had for the last four years.
I am getting the ol tatting shuttles out as I have Tat Days to prepare for and a couple commissioned pieces to make. LadyShuttleMaker aka MadMadPotterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15649649988687609909noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8016156828945610244.post-37946829349494555062015-07-09T11:50:00.005-06:002015-07-09T11:50:48.027-06:00When is the tatting coming back?Good question! Since I moved to the South my life has been "crazy y'all"!

I might have mentioned all the chickens and maybe even the total demo and construction of our farm house kitchen? With that, a four year old, a nut ball husband, and our weekly catastrophes' in one form or another, I have not had a whole lot of time to tat.

The first few months were rather depressing as I was trying to adjust to southern ways. The physical move was a nightmare, I was trying to unpack and live in a run down house with no storage and nearly everything broken; the house and our belongings.

Anyhow, there wasn't a lot of room for anything fun.

I was also suffering pretty bad with carpel tunnel.

After nearly going crazy a few months in, I just HAD to do something creative. My pottery studio isn't anywhere near set up so what could I do?

Well, with a friend's prompting I sat down and started watercoloring; the last painting frontier I had yet to explore. I took to it like a duck to water...literally!

It has been such a balm for my soul during these rougher days. It is less taxing on my wrists and I see results pretty quickly.

These are an example of some of my earlier work this year. LadyShuttleMaker aka MadMadPotterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15649649988687609909noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8016156828945610244.post-34606607884305032312015-06-28T12:35:00.002-06:002015-06-28T12:35:50.331-06:00Enlightened perspective???So this is not going to be tatting related but I think it is worth sharing since our world seems to be in such a contentious state. And don't worry, this is not a religious or political post.

Please read on.

For nearly a year and half we've had no internet and we haven't had television for years. So I have been out of the "what's happening in the world" loop for quite awhile.

To be fair, we did have smart phones that did not work at home, but that I could use while in town. I did use Facebook quite a lot. I tried to get to the library once a month or so to catch up on bills and business. What I am trying to say is that I had basically no leisure time on the Internet. With how full my plate is, my limited Internet time was very directed.

Oh, I whined and complained. I told everyone how, "this is killing me", and "I can't live this way!"

I used to consider myself pretty savvy with the Internet and all the latest technologies. And now I feel like a grandma who never learned how to operate a remote control.
Well, I have had internet access at my home for nearly 3 weeks now. It's actually pretty poor service, but bad service is better than no service right? So I was ecstatic! Information is now at my finger tips once again, even if it is at dial up speeds. I can send and receive emails, (although it seems these days that email has been largely abandoned), I can blog again...YEAH!!!

All good stuff! Right??

But I have learned something that I never realized until now. During the last year, I have never been happier. I feel like there is a future for my child. I am enjoying the beauty of each day. I feel like I am a better mother and wife, and my health has improved. I have formed relationships with my neighbors, which I never did before. (Ironic because in the country neighbors are all a fair distance away
I've rediscovered how wonderful it is to have a smile on my face when I deal with the public. My spirit has become much more generous towards humankind in general. I truly believe that what you "put out there" is what you get back.

So what does all this gooey, happy, unicorns and rainbows, stuff have to do with the Internet?

You know that saying, "You don't know what you have until you lose it."?

Well, this is kind of the opposite, I didn't know what I was missing until I gained it back.

The very first week I was back on the Internet I caught up on current headlines and world news. I was thinking, "Wow, is the world this badly off?, I feel like the apocalypse is right around the corner. The sky is falling!"

My stomach started to hurt, I wasn't sleeping well, my headaches increased, and I started grinding my teeth again. I became snappish to my family. I started feeling depressed and disenfranchised again. Jaded. I didn't realize it but this is who I was before "no internet".

Once again, I am feeling anger about the great divide amongst my fellow human being;, how everyone from opposite sides, think they are right and righteous. All the hatred, the level of tension I feel is palpable. I firmly believe that the lying inflammatory media machines that are our major news networks are solely responsible for all of this!

It is literally in every sense of the word, sickening!

Aye yai yai!

Just writing about it now, I can feel my blood pressure rising and tightness in my throat.

I very nearly decided to do away with it all once again.

I am so thankful for this realization and the wonderful, unplanned vacation I had from the outside world.

I have since taken steps to gain some of that mental freedom back by being very particular with my online time. I'll be focusing on good stuff, like tatting, blogging, the farm and my art work, and mostly my family.

Some people might say that I am burying my head in the sand, and they might be right. All I know is that I am a better person when that garbage is out of my life!

Key emphasis on ALMOST.
I know I have said it many times, but I have to say it again, the tatting community is the best community on earth!

You have all made me feel so welcomed back and your support is what keeps me going.
So thank you very much!!!

I honestly thought that after this amount of time I would be long forgotten.

I am humbled.

I'm definitely not as quick as I used to be to post on this blog and get items listed in the shop. Probably because I have the most rambunctious 4 year old on the planet and she keeps me thoroughly exhausted. Also I am taking care of a farm now, and have all the responsibilities that go with that.

Anyhow, I thought it would be fun to catch you all up on what went on in my life during the last year and a half.
This is not in any particular order, it's just a summary of what pops into my mind.

Here we go:

Drove from Idaho straight to Mississippi in 36 hours.

Moved into the most crooked 80's farmhouse one could imagine.

Bought baby chicks and ducks and then built coops!

Learned how to butcher our own meat.

Had over 1,000 dollars worth of various water leaks.

Took care of six goats for a friend. (this was a total nightmare and could be a very long blog post in and of itself.)

Dog got bitten in the face by a cotton mouth snake.

Husband got severely burned and was out of work for 6 weeks.

I got stung by these mean red wasps that sent me to the emergency room where I also learned that I was allergic to morphine. (this was a terrible day)

Made good friends with all the surrounding neighbors.

Started absolutely loving country life!

Got hit by a tornado and sustained damage to our house as well as loosing over a dozen 100+ year old trees.

Got six inches of snow which apparently hasn't happened in MS since 1947.

Husband healed up beautifully!

I carry Epi pens wherever I go.

Bought and hatched many more ducks and chickens.

Built (and still working on it)a kitchen from absolute scratch.

...and finally and ongoing: Raising a daughter who runs freely outdoors with the biggest imagination possible all without TV and Internet!

This isn't everything, just what I could remember off the top of my head. We are learning so much and gaining so many skills. This really is a dream come true!

Now if we could only move the farm to the Pacific Northwest...

I owe a BIG apology to the dozens and dozens of people who have requested this pattern. It is by far the most popular request I get.

I lost the pattern sometime back and well, I didn't have Internet for nearly a year and a half....so yeah....there is that.

I would like to make it up to everyone today. With Patti's permission the pattern can be found > here:

I am back!!
We were finally able to get an outrageously expensive and yet extremely limited Internet plan! Isn't that lovely!
Anyhow, I will be able to blog again and I view that as a real victory.
This is a story I've been wanting to share since October 2014 when I first learned it myself. (Even though in a round about way, it is sort of a story about me.)
We have to go way back to the time I lived in Korea. For all my bloggy reader pals you will remember my blogs during this time. After living in S. Korea for a few months I learned that absolutely no where could tatting be found in their culture. So I made some Korean girlfriends and I taught them to tat. That in itself is a lovely story. But wait until you hear what happened after I left!!!!

One of my students, my star student Anna, went on to start her own Korean tatting blog and became a tatting teacher and designer herself. Well, unbeknownst to me, her blog became wildly popular and quickly gained thousands of followers. Tatting had officially taken off in Korea like wild fire.

Fast forward to the present. This student ended up marrying an American soldier and has come to live in America. One of my other students, who is one of my dearest friends and kindred spirit came to stay with us for a few weeks in MS, this was her very first visit to America. This all took place last Fall. We learned that Anna lived in Destin, FL which is only a few hours from us...so of course we all went road tripping. Plus it was lovely to share our white sand beaches with our visitor Kyoungmi.

This is the part where I learned the following. In 2014, the country of South Korea had a television special about tatting in Korea, of course it all started with Anna, who is now and forever reverently called, "The Mother of Tatting".

One of her students went on to write two Korean tatting books which Anna gifted to me on our visit.
Of course, in the midst of all this there is a tiny mention of me, the American who brought tatting to Korea.
Anna showed me all the press and it's all Korean, Korean, Korean, Sherry Pence, Korean, Korean.

Absolutely delightful!

I can tell you, I was one excited teacher to hear that all this had been taking place since I left Korea in 2009.

You know, I almost never went to Korea? It was decided that I would stay in America while my husband did his year tour. But at the 11th hour, I made the decision to go. And of course I am SO glad I did!

How cool is all this???

This is Kyoungmi, myself, and Anna (who at the time was expecting her second child).

These are the beautiful Korean tatting books!

All this happened in essentially 5 years.

Okay friends, please be patient with me as I update all my links and information. I will also be reopening my Etsy tatting shop, where I will continue to sell my one of a kind tatting shuttles and hand dyed silk and cotton threads, and of course my Tatting books.

Also, I have been out of the scene for sooo long that I don't know what I've missed. Neither do I know how ancient and outdated I must be by now. Would anyone kindly mind educating me and bring me up to speed on what is current?

And finally, I will be going to Palmetto Tat days in September, so I hope to see a lot of you there! Yay!

Hi everybody! So I have been officially without Internet for a whole year. Can you believe it! It's torture. We are hoping to find a solution to this problem in April. Please hang with me everybody, I am sooooo sorry!
In the meantime, I have become a farmer. We have lots of chickens and I am working on a big garden and Miss P is having the time of her life! We also do not have television so I am completely out of the loop.
Anyhow, it is my hope to get this blog and my Etsy shop going once again as soon as I physically can.
Happy Tatting everybody!

I apologize.
We must live in the last place in the US that doesn't have internet, I swear, at least once a day I holler in frustration about my inability to stay connected to the world. We can't even get any companies to run cable out for us. Our only option at this point is a certain satellite service that is prohibitively costly.
Sooooooo, that leaves me with only being able to use our local library, and I have been waaaaayyyy too busy for even that as of late.
So much has happened since our move to Mississippi and the purchase of "The Farm". I feel like I have lived a lifetime already, when in actuality it has only been six months.
I don't want to make any promises I can't keep, but I will say that as soon as we can find a solution to our Internet problem I have full intentions of resuming this blog, and my tatting business.
I'm still here guys!

I am currently surrounded by boxes that need to be unpacked. And for some crazy unexplainable reason I decided to turn my new home into a construction area right away. Lot's of remodeling going on. It isn't boring.
I hope to set up my tatting life once again and start dyeing my hand dyed cotton and silk threads soon. Thank you for bearing with me and my insane life!

The BIG move is finally upon me. It's bittersweet. Moving is tough and I've done it more times than should be legal. We have been blessed with the most incredible property I could have ever wished for. I am mostly excited about what kind of childhood this new chapter will provide for my sweet Piccadilly! We bought a 43 acre farm and it is amazing. I will share more about that once I am settled. It will be an indeterminate amount of time before we will have internet again. We are remote enough that internet service is currently out of our financial reach. I figure I can go to the library once a week to catch up and blog etc. So for awhile I will be slow to respond to emails and things of that nature. Please forgive me in advance.

I wanted to share this bit of providence. I was able to purchase two of these vintage wooden DMC display cases from an old variety store that went out of business. This same store is where I purchased my first tatting shuttle at a very young age. So these boxes will be great reminders and a great addition to my tatting collection. I think they will house my hand dyed tatting thread in the near future.
Bizarre real estate photos.Disclaimer: This post has nothing to do with tatting.

I am taking a break from the past two weeks of the daunting, exhausting, and all consuming task of house hunting. Yes, we are officially moving to Mississippi.
When? That is still to be determined.
For military related reasons, my husband has been apart from us for the past 4 and half months. As you can imagine, we are anxious to be a family once again. So we are in the midst of all kinds of upheaval in hopes that we can be together by the New Year.

Anyhow, this post is just a funny aside. I have seen dozens and dozens of homes with hundreds and hundreds of AWEFUL photos.
Realtors, what's up?
Seriously, how hard is it to get a decent photo? A whimsical magical train inspired by my beautiful sweet 2 yr old daughter. Trains are her favorite right now, so I designed it for her and when she said, "That's really cool mom". I decided to share it with you. Hopefully in time for Christmas.
I believe the first to guess correctly was our very clever poet Miss Sarah! I very much enjoyed her posts, as well as everyone's. It was just as much fun for me to watch your progress, so much so that I may have to do another one next Fall. We will see...

I am so happy that everyone has enjoyed this TIAS. I do believe it turned out to be a smashing success, all because of you guys! I hope many of you learned a new trick or two.
A special thank you to our Jane for dreaming up the concept years ago. I am looking forward to her TIAS coming in January I believe.
I will keep the TIAS community blog open indefinitely so that everyone has a chance to share their work as they get caught up.
Now for the
BONUS I promised you. I was going to email it out individually as you faithfully proved your completion. However, due to my sheer exhaustion lately, we will have to go with the honor system. Here it is friends, you earned it!

<a href="http://freepdfhosting.com/d9acb119bb.pdf

I am trying to keep track of where around the world we are all from. Please take a look at this list below. If you are participating in the TIAS and you do not see your location, would you please leave a comment about where you are from?
Also, we have exactly 100 tatters who have requested to join the community blog, so that is not counting our participants who are staying "under the radar". We have also had nearly 11,000 hits in less than a month! Long live tatting!
