My first Mother's Day...

....was AWESOME!!! First off, I LOVE being a mom even when I get puked on 42 times a day. Secondly, my hubby hooked me up with a Nook color. I was completely and pleasantly surprised. I've never had a fancy cell phone or any sort of wireless tablet so I am learning all the cool touch screen functions. I can even check my email on my nook and look what else I can do:
..surf the web. Pretty cool! I am mostly excited about all the neat kids books and learning software that I can access on this device.
Wow, Piccadilly is going to grow up in such a different world. I will have to make sure she knows what a real book is and how to write freehand and actually play outside...LOL!

I have a Kindle, can do the same with it. only just in black and white. but I like the fact it is not back lit, no eye strain after being on the computer all day at work. enjoy. can you read pdfs on it? I like that aspect, I can download my current tatting pattern on it.

I have a Kindle, but I also have a ton of real books! I like that I can carry so many books with me in such a compact space... I'm close to 600 free books! However, there's nothing like the feel and smell of a brand new book!

I'm sure Miss P will spend plenty of time outdoors, maybe even on a snowboard!

I know people talk about a paperless society and libraries closing. What a shame as a book in hand has pleasures all their own. The smell of the paper; I have an old leather covered copy of “Vanity Faire” with the wood cut pictures...it is smallish and has gold edges on the paper and a ribbon marker. Now THOSE were the days of bookmaking. Next to tatting, books and the thought of being in a bookstore is one of my great life pleasures. When I was a little girl, the first place I found in each town where we lived, was the library. Mom and I would research the history of the area in the books. When I was a young mother I used to go once a week and have a story hour for 4 and 5 year olds. I even had hand puppets that interacted with the children. Books were my companions because its hard to make friends when you change schools every 28 days for about 6 years! The first little town I lived in for any time at all was Soap Lake, Washington. I learned all about how the coulees were formed (glaciers) and the minerals in the lake which made it go ‘soapy’ in the wind produced waves. I lost over 5,000 books in the flood of 97; every conceivable subject. Be SURE and teach Miss P about books, and making houses from sticks and stones ~ out doors. I used moss for my mattress in my little ‘cabin’ I built of small branches and leaves. I tied the joins together with stripped bark...Wonderful memories...

I dont have a kindle yet but have looked at them, yours in colour looks great, what a lovely present. I am sure Miss P with your guild will learn how to write freehand and read a proper book, there is nothing that can take the place of a paper book. I am not sure what type of world we will have in years to come I hope the old ways of communicating will not die.

Hi Sherry, Welcome to the Nook Color world! I got one as a Christmas present and am having lots of fun with it. While I still like the hard copy type of book, the Nook has its place for helping keep down the clutter and/or not have to hold or carry so much! I use mine to borrow library books (my library has an arrangement with a service called 'Overdrive') and I also upload pdfs. Jon's books look really nice on it (I had them uploaded and with me in Spokane). I can also run Interweave Press' downloadable version of their DVD's (sorry not tatting :)). Did anyone tell you about Free Nook Fridays? Watch their blog 'Unbound' http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Unbound-NOOK-NOOKcolor-and/bg-p/Unbound. The free offers do expire so don't wait. There is also a lot of content available for kids; sorry I can't tell you where to find it but you might have a few months anyway before Miz Picadilly needs it :) Bye for now, Mimi.
