Tatting Teaser Revealed

"Festival Elephant" by Pam Palmer

I think I set a personal tatting record yesterday. I tatted for 15 hours straight. Yes, I was that excited to see this project completed. It is way too big to fit on my scanner and I needed a dark back ground to set it off. This was the best I could find. I am afraid it detracts a little from all the colors.
Anyhow, this version isn't exactly to pattern specifications, of course I had to add my own little "tweaks" here and there. I opted to keep the elephant's head one color by personal choice, but I am pretty sure it is meant to be tatted in color for a "head dress".
This is a lovely pattern and I've wanted to tat it ever since I first saw it. Well done Pam!
Her book is entitled "Festival Elephant" and can be purchased through Handy Hands.

Kudos to you! I've had that pattern for a year...I have meant to do it as a gift to my daughter, Kristen, who loves all things Elephant! And, now that I have a lot of HDT, beads and even some very wee bells...I can see it coming together. What size thread did you use? I was thinking of painting a silk background of the African plains at sunset..(you know the stereotypical shot? LOL)
Mine would have 'escaped' the festival in that setting..:>)
I did find the 'exact' elephant color for the body ~ I even have tiny, shiny discs to hang upon it..
I can see it in my mind's eye...just need to get it done.
I'm so proud of you, finishing such a large task!!!

Your elephant turned out great! I have this pattern, but I've never really considered tatting it... I just wanted to own it!

WOW! I totally did not see that coming - I don't know what I thought you were tatting when I saw your teasers, but I'm pretty sure an elephant was not on my radar. Great job!

WOW! This i awesome!!! KUDOS!!! I was thinking in a pretty rainbow mat. I think it would look pretty alone without the elephant. :-)

Thank you everyone for the lovely and encouraging comments.

BJ and Krystle, it was tatted in size 20 Flora and it measures 12" from trunk to tail and stands 8" tall.

WOW! Sherry it's beautiful. I doubt I could do anything for 15 hours straight, even tat, however I can see how once you got going you'd be itching to see it completed. Awesome job.

Thanks for visiting my blog. To answer your ? Batik is wax resist dyeing. You draw your design on your fabic, decide were you don't want color and use hot wax there and then you 'paint' dye on the fabric. After it has cured for 24hrs you put your piece between sheets of old newspaper and use a hot iron to set the dye and get the wax out. Thanks for sharing your elephant-it is way cool!

LOL! Oh, THAT's what you were tatting! I was so curious with your teaser that I ran over to Gina's blog and went looking at posts 4-5 years back trying to find what you two were talking about in your comments section of your "teaser". I got distracted when I saw a tatted basket. I had done one similar to it, too, LOL! I never did find her elephant, LOL!

Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog just now. I did think of you when I saw the sky against the pink blossoms. It reminded me of the photos you took when you made the "Cherry Blossom" colorway.

Congratulations on completing it! I know the satisfaction in completing it; the elephant is one that is on my to-do list, but no date to start on it yet! Besides the peacocks, I only managed to complete Pam's camel and framed it up on my own, and hanging it on the wall of my workstation in the office, I am admiring it everyday :)

Wonderful job on the Elephant. 15 solid hours of tatting sounds like heaven.

Fabulous! You got done much faster than I did! You asked what size thread I used - I used 2 strands of rayon floss which tatted somewhere between 20 and 30. I also used a lot of beads so it was time consuming to split the floss and add the beads but it's shiny and sparkly and that's what I wanted. I also changed the ear because I didn't like the original.

So....are you going to do the peacock next? It's on my to-do list, but YOU will have custom-made drop-dead gorgeous colors to work with if you tat the bird.

LadyShuttleMaker aka MadMadPotter said...

I would LOVE to do the peacock but I don't know where to get the pattern.

That's a great looking elephant, Sherry! It really is a presentation piece and well worth framing. Pam's patterns intrigue me. I've got a couple of them, but am not certain if the elephant is one. After seeing it took you 15 hours of tatting maybe I don't want to go look! However, I was wondering if those were Flora colors or if they were your own on top of Flora thread?

LadyShuttleMaker aka MadMadPotter said...

Marty, all the threads I used in this pattern are Flora. It actually took about 30 hours to tat the whole thing, but 15 of those hours were straight.
But I think it was worth it. :)
