Structured Radomness

O.k. so this isn't the most original doily design, but this one does demonstrate what I call "structured randomness" in it's design. I've been playing around with this concept for awhile. And while I am not a "doily person", the doily lends itself perfectly to this idea. Coming from a traditional art background I am very drawn to free flow creation. Tatting is not exactly a free flow art form and doilies in particular are very structured and geometrical.
So I've been trying to combine both free flow and structure together to ultimately create an harmonious result. I don't know if I have achieved that goal in this piece but it is an idea that I am interested in at the moment and will work on until I am satisfied.
I realize that we all have different aesthetics, and many of us like the predictable repeated geometric qualities of traditional tatting design. Then there are those of us who like to step out of our comfort zone and get a little wild and crazy with the unexpected. Personally I like both the traditional and the unexpected aspects of design, so voila, by working on combining both we shall see where this journey ultimately ends.
Please feel free to weigh in with your thoughts and preferences.

MORE UPDATES
It looks like my HDT "SUMMER POND" made it into a treasury by the same name.

It also looks like I missed a big milestone for this blog. I finally reached 100,000 unique visitors. I always like to celebrate these things but unique life circumstances have taken precedence and I guess I'll have to wait for the next 500,000 visitors milestone to celebrate.

Picadilly:
Things are holding steady. My cervix is no better or worse than the week before. ..and hopefully that will remain true after my doc visit today. I am still on bed rest.
This baby is proving to be a real survivor! I think she is stronger than I am.
The constant migraines are keeping me away from the computer so I do what I can in the short moments that I can actually look at the computer monitor.
I go in for my weekly ultra sound today. I am hoping upon hope that I don't get admitted to the hospital again. That has been the pattern: Regular check-up turns into hospital admission.
The good news is that I am 6 and 1/2 months pregnant today and I have gained a total of 5 pounds so far. Whoo hoo! I have been eating hamburgers, pizza, brownies, cookies and ice-cream....all things that are normally NOT a part of my diet but I am desperately trying to put on some pounds....so the sacrifices I must make...LOL!

That's it for now. Every day is precarious. As I have stated before, I do WHAT I can, WHEN I can.

Your idea reminds me of Mary Konior's concept of "random tatting". Certainly worth exploring.
6 1/2 months for Picadilly is good news. You have been in my thoughts a lot.

I think the doily is lovely, I am so pleased you have put on some weight. I hope the scan goes well. My son and his wife had a baby boy last week, weighing 10 lbs 5 ozs.

The randomness is just enough for me -- makes the doily look like a flower field! Congratulations on the 6.5 months. Babies are tougher little beings than we sometimes give them credit for. Remember that old saying "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!"? You've got the knot tying down pat -- just hang on!

Hooray, for Picadilly! Congratulations on the 5 lbs, too.

And your doily looks great! I look forward to seeing where your explorations take you.

I really hesitate to give any advice since you have had so much already, but ice packs to my head and neck really helped my migraines during pregnancy and it is one of the few things you CAN do.

way to cook that little biscuit in your oven! She is going to be such a wonderful little creature, and threre will be days when you just sit and stare at her for hours, and tears come to your eyes because you'll have no idea how something so wonderful came into your life.....and then you'll know even better how much GOd loves you, because you'll see that your love for your little baby is a reflection of His love for you. Even though you are miserable, I am still so happy for you for what is to come. :-)

The days all add up, don't they....slowly, slowly, you are getting there. You are learning in the hardest school of motherhood already - the greatest gift you can give your children is Time.
I love the new doily, I hope one day the pattern will be for sale!

You should name the doily "Lazy Daisy".

SOOO glad that you are still hanging in there and the little one is doing well! Make an Ensure milkshake!

I love your doily!
Your new diet is my regular since I am a picky junkfood eater so anytime you need more just let me know :D
Have a great day! :)

Keep hanging in there, keep eating however much you dislike it and count each day as a bonus for Picadilly.
You doiley is really lovely. So very different.

6.5 months... yippee! I would gladly ship 50 pounds to you, if it could only be arranged! Seriously, I'm glad you've been able to gain a little weight, and as a migraine sufferer, I can only imagine what you're going through.

I love the doily! I am a doily person, although I don't have them lying all over my house. I love making them and then using them to decorate... drawers! Yes, I love looking at beautiful pieces of lace that don't gather dust from sitting on tables! I love the way the vines meander between the rows of daisies. Will this pattern be available? I have a daisy-lovin' daughter who would surely cherish one of these!

Picadilly Rocks!

Glad you sound so much better in this post...

The doily is amazing - great idea and it demonstrates exactly what you described in your post very well. Good read today!

Just coming out of hospital myself following spinal surgery, I have missed what has been going on with you. You certainly sound as if you have been having a tough time!
I am sending all the good vibes I possibly can over the pond for you and your little one.

The doily is really interesting. I would never have thought of having any randomness in a doily, but yours certainly seems to work. I find there is quite a bit of randomness in my flower designs, but you would expect that with different shaped petals.

Praise God that you and little Picadilly are hanging in there. My prayers are with you all constantly. It is good to see some tatting and blogging from you. I love the doily. Free form has always been my thing. No painting inside the lines for me. Hope the ultrasound went well. Love you!
