This is what I had in mind for the snowflake. I didn't end up using a stiffener after all. I decided to put the snowflake on top of the hat rather than on the side. I used size 20 flora for the snowflake. I then used invisible thread to carefully sew it on to the hat.
I have never formally been taught to crochet. I taught myself. I don't know the different stitches nor how to read patterns. But in spite of all that I crocheted this hat over the weekend, so if you see about a bazillion mistakes then you know why.

You did a bang up job on that hat! I too am a self taught crocheter.....don't do a lick of it. Too busy tatting and bobbin lacemaking HAH. I like how you matched the Flora thread with the eyelash yarn bands on the hand. No mistakes I see. Good job!
LOVE the snowflake on top of the hat. Splendid idea especially for a short arse like me - everybody could see it on top of my head if I made one!!!
JaneEb - another self taught crocheter!!!
I've been crocheting since I was seven years old, never mind how many years ago that was, and I don't see any mistakes. The hat is precious. What a wonderful idea. Also, I am really jealous of your snow. We haven't seen any to speak of in Alabama for several years.
Hi Sherry, Thanks for your nice comments on the tatted edge I put on my gloves. I don't know how I missed this post. For teaching yourself to crochet you did a fabulous job on the hat, it turned out great and of course the tatted snowflake is a very nice touch!
